New Tools for Science Policy

Informing Science Policy Deliberation

Society and decision makers are calling on science to produce more useful information that informs problems, clarifies choices and expands alternatives. But the ‘basic’ and ‘applied’ approaches to research are not intended to respond to discrete societal problems.  Limiting the design and management of research programs solely to attributes of science that do not foster participation by users leads to missed opportunities in linking science with decision making.

In this talk we propose a new multi-dimensional research typology that includes variables for considering users in the design of research. The goal of the typology is to support more robust discussion about the design and management of new scientific research programs whose aim is to produce useful information for decision support. The presentation will include tools for attendees to characterize their own research using the typology and, in so doing, to stimulate ideas for institutional mechanisms to link science to decision making.
