Q&A on risks and regulations of drone technology

Andrew Maynard, a professor in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society, comments on impacts and pathways for regulating drones as they soar in popularity with the public.

Federal Aviation Administration officials are estimating there will be more than one million drones gifted during this year’s holiday season. Yet the FAA currently has no regulations in place for integrating drones into U.S. airspace — despite a mandate for completion by Sept. 30, 2015. Paired with the growing use of drones by businesses and the federal government, questions are being raised about the impact these unmanned aerial devices (UAD) will have on airspace safety and our own privacy.
