New book: Designing the New American University

by Michael M. Crow and William Dabars

Designing the New American University

America’s research universities consistently dominate global rankings but may be entrenched in a model that no longer accomplishes its purposes. With their multiple roles of discovery, teaching, and public service, these institutions represent the gold standard in American higher education, but their evolution since the nineteenth century has been only incremental. The need for a new and complementary model that offers accessibility to an academic platform underpinned by knowledge production and concern with societal outcomes is critical to our well-being and economic competitiveness. In Designing the New American University, Michael M. Crow and William Dabars examine the contemporary American research university from historical and theoretical perspectives in order to propose the new complementary model and present a case study of the reconceptualization of Arizona State University.

Crow, co-founder of CSPO, is an academic leader, designer of knowledge enterprises, and science and technology policy scholar. He has been president of Arizona State University since July 2002 and was previously professor of science and technology policy and executive vice provost of Columbia University. Dabars is senior research fellow in the Office of the President and an associate research professor in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies, Arizona State University.
