Decision making in energy systems

Nathan Johnson, Assistant Professor, Department of Engineering and Computing Systems, Arizona State University

Photo-Nathan-Johnson-220x300The landscape of the energy industry is rapidly changing–growing use of renewables, societal shift towards low-carbon energy, policy and regulatory change, technological innovation–and forces engineers, policy makers, and business people to address new and increasingly complex energy-related challenges. Our everyday decision making tools and processes must be updated to meet this challenge. This talk will first discuss the complex issues underlying energy system design and control by characterizing the interactions between technical, environmental, and human systems that affect energy supply and use. A generalizeable mathematical and computational framework will then be discussed for energy system modeling, and a series of examples will be provided from micro-grids, campus power grids, and building energy systems.
